We blew the dust off of the Autumn wreath! Goodbye Summer wreath - this is the last picture of you on the door [sob!] until next year!
Lesson 1 - Language Arts: Drawing and Writing; also on to Originate Oodles Of Oo's Operating On Overzealous Ovals
This was my daughter's first Portfolio assignment that will be sent to the teacher! The assignment was to draw something she is interested in, then to write a description or caption for the photo. My daughter drew a picture of Rapunzel up in her tower, and happy, smiling trees growing near by. She decided that she wanted to make her caption into a riddle for her teacher, Mrs. D, to solve! So, as she dictated, I wrote down what she wanted to say neatly, then she copied from there. She also wanted to make her words surround another picture of Rapunzel swinging on her hair like she does in the Disney movie, Tangled. SO CUTE!!! I thought it was creative of her to want to make it into a riddle, and also to make the text wrap around the photo...
Lesson 2 - Math - Working with Shapes. We punched out shapes the Connections Academy provided, and after doing some workbook exercises about recognizing shapes in everyday life, she made pictures with the shapes. In this photo, she made a girl with purple hair, wearing a crown, and also a long choo-choo train. The kids noticed that our wreath is a circle, and an "O" on the way outside where the kids practiced drawing shapes with chalk. The photo is of their "Man of Many Circles."
Lesson 3 - Music: Yankee Doodle Dandy. The Connections Academy provided a CD, chock full of classic Kindergarten music. Today's lesson was about trying to keep a beat on a drum, while marching your legs to Yankee Doodle Dandy. We didn't have a drum, so we used the lid from a cookie tin. Of course, the part where he puts a feather in his cap and calls it Macaroni, both kids thought was hi-lar-i-ous! I remember thinking it was pretty silly when I was their age too.
Lesson 4 - Social Studies: Proverbs (cont.). Today's Proverbs to learn were: Don't cry over spilled milk; A stitch in time saves nine; Where there's a will, there's a way. We talked about the meaning of each Proverb, then had her draw her interpretation of each saying.
Her brother is finally getting into the School action (he would be in preschool) and asked to do some workbooks too! I have them all ready and waiting for his interest to peak, so I started him out on pages where you can practice tracing letters. He is already pretty good at sounding out words, but his attention span is that of, well, a 3 or 4 year old boy (he turns 4 in about a month and a half), so it's hard to get him to have the will to sit and write! Girls and boys are so different in that respect. I didn't want to force it, even though he is capable of learning the material, so I just waited until he was ready. Gotta keep the experience positive!
