Kindergarten at Home - Day 7 - Community Helpers (we needed one today!)

Lesson 1 - Movement: Hopping.  Hop along with me, because it's HOP, HOP, HOPSCOTCH time - yaaaaaaay!  First I drew, then I let her draw one of her own to hop on.  I explained the rules and how you must skip the spot your rock is currently on.  After doing the numbers in sequence, we did random throwing for fun.

Lesson 2 - Social Studies: Communities, Technology Studies: Internet Community & Safety.  First, I wanted to familiarize my daughter with the concept of Community.  We watched videos on Brian Pop Jr that talked about different communities: Suburban, Urban and Rural; Community Helpers (like Police, Fire, etc.); Neighborhoods; and School community.
After she "got" the concept of community, we moved on to talk about how there is also an Internet community - a digital one that you can't touch, but you can still see and interact with people using email, social media and video communication like on Tango or Skype.  It can be a great learning tool, but you have to be careful about online strangers and never to give them personal information... ... ... ... just then, our lesson was interrupted by a huge swooooooooooosh, swoooooosh, bang, swish, bang, crush, smash!  I looked outside, and our carport/party tent had just blown down the hill in our front yard, and landed ON the power line to the pump house!
So, after a phone call to the power company, we got to experience a real community helper in real life, right in our own front yard!  It was so timely for our lesson today!

Lesson 3 - Science: Parts of the Body.  First, we traced her body on a large roll of butcher paper we bought at the Dollar Tree.  She got to see her proportions right in front of her!  Then, she made herself an outfit and added face and hair.
Then, we made a puppet from body parts we cut out from the activities book the Connections Academy provided.  I had colored brad/connectors in my craft supplies, so she chose the color of brad that would match the color she was going to make his skin and outfit.  Then, we added some fun, fluffy hair!
On the back, we labeled some of his very basic, major bones, like the Cranium, Mandible, Ribs,  Humerus, Pelvis, Femur, Tibia, Fibula, and my favorite, the Phalanges!  Then, we sang Dem Bones (the leg bone's connected to the foot bone) for fun, but we know that there are actual names for each bone! ; )

Lesson 4 - Math: Top, Middle, Bottom.  Like yesterday, I added on to the lesson, by creating a math equation: Add together the number of cubes on the top, plus, the number of cubes on the bottom, plus, the number of cubes in the middle (2+2+2=6).  Her new little puppet friend helped her concentrate.

Lesson 5 - Language Arts: Fantastically Form Ff's Finessing From Found Fearlessness
I think I can... I think I can... I think I can read The Little Engine That Could!  After I read the story, she answered questions about the story, recalling the Sequence of Events and details from the story.
