Kindergarten at Home - Day 6 - First Live Lesson

It was SUNNY again today!
Today was our first, to be weekly, Live Lesson at the Connections Academy.  A Live Lesson is a virtual classroom (using Adobe Connect), where you are connected with your teacher and all of your classmates (who might live in different cities all over the state - some hundreds of miles away!).  The school provided the headset with microphone.  After the teacher told us about herself and showed us pictures of her and her family, each student had the opportunity to tell about themselves as the teacher showed a picture to everyone of that student (we had sent the photo prior to the Live Lesson).  Don't worry, the teacher can turn on and off everyone's microphone until you are called on, so you can't hear background noises of other people's homes ; )

Lesson 1 - Movement: Hopping.  We practiced hopping on one foot, hopping on both feet, and then a combination of the two.  Then, we took it a little further by hopping between these painted logs we have in the yard, making it like an obstacle course to avoid touching the "hot lava" on the ground!  Then, we decided to have a potato sack race!  We have the sacks from a fun Field Day event we coordinated over the summer with our friends and family at our house...

Lesson 2 - Social Studies: Water Safety - We watched the videos from Bobber, the Water Safety Dog and then we talked about each element of water safety: wear a life vest if you don't know how to swim; wear a life vest when riding on a boat weather you know how to swim or not; always swim with a buddy; make sure an adult is with you or knows where you are; learn to swim and how to float; swim where there is a life guard; and beware of bodies of water that might have currents and undertow (like rivers and oceans).  All of this water talk inspired Little Miss Fishy Lips below...

Lesson 3 - Math: Over, Under, On.  Since she is already familiar with those concepts, we turned them into arithmetic word problems.  I stacked two glass bowls (so you can see through them), and balanced two shish-kabob skewers on top so I could make various numbers of cubes be under the bowls, on the bowls, or over the bowls.  First, I asked her to write down the number of cubes that are under the bowl; then, write down the number of cubes that are on bowls; then, write down the number of cubes over the bowls. Next, I asked her to add together the cubes that are below, on, and over the bowls.  Then, I helped her arrange that into proper equation form: 3 + 3 + 2 = 8.  She likes to draw her 3's backwards - we'll have to work on that ; )

Lesson 4 - Music: Sang Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear and did all the motions with the song (like, "Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, touch the ground..."), then did the movements to London Bridge is Falling Down - brother had fun doing these too.  In the next Music Lesson, we tried to sing the Alphabet to a different tune than the usual Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.  We tried Mary Had a Little Lamb, Jingle Bells, the Nutcracker and ended with the way they sing it on the kids TV show, Super Why.  It was actually difficult the first time you try to change the tune!  It didn't sound difficult at first, but it requires a little concentration, even for me!

Lesson 5 - Language Arts:
Time to Excellently Effect Ee's Ever Executing Etchings Effortlessly

Then, the concepts of Comparing and Contrasting.  Over the last week, we read, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Tale of the Three Little Pigs, The Three Bill Goats Gruff, and Henny Penny.
I liked the assignment from the Connections Academy the way it was, so that is what we did it - no modifications, changes, or switcheroos from me this time!  These questions were copied and pasted directly from their instructions given to me for my student, and my daughter's answers are in parentheses:
Compare and contrast these stories by asking the following questions
    1. All stories have names. What do we call the name of a story? (I reminded her that it's the "title" and they all have titles)
    2. What number word was in the title of one of the stories we read? (three)
    3. Which stories had animals as characters? (after listing them all off, she then said, "I think all of them!")
    4. Which story had a person as a character? (Goldilocks)
    5. Name the character who caused trouble in each story? ("The Fox and Henny Penny because she made them follow her but the sky wasn't really falling; the wolf; the troll because he's mean, and the bears because they scared Goldilocks and she learned her lesson never to do that again")
    6. What story did you like best? (Goldilocks)

Have the student recall details from the stories by answering the following questions.
    1. What would you say to Goldilocks if you could talk to her? ("I'll say I love her and she's cute and I'll draw her a picture") - she is really into princesses right now so this answer doesn't surprise me!
    2. Why did Billy Goat Gruff knock the troll into the water? ("because the troll was a bad guy and tried to eat them")
    3. Was the sky really falling on Henny Penny’s head? ("Nooooo, it was a berry or stick - she figured that out.") - she said this really matter of fact
