Kindergarten at Home - Day 3 - Thick, Thin... and AbstraCat!

Third day of Kindergarten - my dining table is starting to get messy full!  It has been our temporary classroom, and we haven't eaten dinner there for days!  I  chose that [temporary] location because it has the least distractions and the most room to spread out.  I ordered a two-desk set and shelving unit combo online (on ultra clearance from JC Penney with free shipping, plus I went through ebates, and got extra cash back for my purchase - score!  It looks just like the Pottery Barn one, but for half the price!) for the kids a few days back, and I CAN'T WAIT FOR IT TO ARRIVE!  Need... organization space... now.

Lesson 1 - Math concepts: Thicker and Thinner.  Workbooks are some of my daughter's favorite things to do, and asks for them when she's bored!  There are some workbooks in the dollar bin at Target right now, and when we were there yesterday, they were marked down to only $0.50 each... so, I bought two of each I could dig up!  One of them had a Thicker and Thinner lesson - yay!  The Connections Academy also sent us workbooks for each subject.  It's fun to have more than one publisher so you can get varied illustration styles, and varied instruction styles, and even more lessons!  Then, I asked her what she can make thicker from things in our house.  Since we had just gone to Target yesterday, her first thought was of the shopping bags: empty it is thinner... and it is thicker when full!  I also have these three stools I had bought from Ikea about 8 years ago; I went back to get another one recently (so I would have 4 at the breakfast bar area in our kitchen instead of only 3), thinking they were the exact same, but after I got it home and assembled, I found out the new models are actually wider (thicker) than the old models, even though they have the same sku# - blasted redesign! (I guess Ikea thought more people have thicker bums here in the States?!).  Little Rapunzel was sure to point that out to me again.  Thanks.  ; )

Lesson 2 - Social Studies: Appropriate Clothing for the Season or Climate.  We talked about the seasons, and then we watched a video link the Connections Academy provided that talked about why we wear clothing (and showed some different cultural clothing and different climates).  We then decided to have a... FASHION SHOW!  Our first model is sporting long pants, a light sweatshirt, and a hat... he must be wearing the latest Fall fashion!  Our second model wont get wet in this ensemble - with head-to-toe slick materials, and with the garden fairy dress and flower, she must be representing Spring wear!  Our [pouty] male model must be warm with all those thick layers and fuzzy Fargo hat - for which season would you need all those thick layers?! Winter! You're right! For our fourth and final ensemble, our ice cream cone surfer was so warm, she had to cut off the bottom 3/4 of her pants, and get rid of sleeves for the sunny weather this season brings... Summer, of course!

Lesson 3 - Movement - the assignment from Connections Academy was to experiment with walking using different strides and speeds; then changing to natural pace and stride whenever I clapped two times.  It was pretty hot outside today, so this exercise didn't last long, but we did get it done. (she's trying to achieve the largest possible stride here)

Lesson 4 - Language Arts - Components of a Story - we watched a Brain Pops Jr. episode Connections Academy recommended, that explained the different parts of a story: the title, the main idea, supporting details, the paragraph and the sequence of events.  Then, we read the story, "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" and we practiced those new vocabulary words.  I elaborated on the lesson by having her create her own book, recounting what she had just heard and recalling the title, then illustrating the main idea.  Then, in the pages she illustrated the supporting details in the same sequence of events (as best she could remember).  She did add a last page to the story that showed the Troll had a broken heart.  She also drew her miniature horse, Rosabelle eating the grass with the goats too.
The second part of the Language Arts exercise was to practice handwriting.  We practiced being blissful begetting bountiful, beautiful Bb's... we got to do it outside on the deck!  p.s. that's my Starbucks drink, not her's -- no Go-Go Juice 'round these parts!

Lesson 5 - Art - Fine Motor Skills, a-go-go!  All the kindergarten basics - cutting, pasting, painting and drawing to hone in those kinder' skills.  Born an artist, my daughter is well-practiced, soooooo, I told her to make an abstract picture... she chose to make an Abstract Cat... it's "Abstracat"!
