Kindergarten at Home - Day 2 - Grow and Change Nature Walk at Home
The second day of school at home had a lot of Vitamin D time. It feels so awesome to have the sun on your back while you’re “teaching” a lesson! (Especially because we have either overcast skies or precipitation for more than half of the year!)
Lesson 1: Make it Go 2 (yesterday was Make it Go 1). My daughter experimented with more methods for making things “go”. She hit a ball to make it roll… she discovered that she can make our dog “go” by throwing the ball… and we made a little sail boat to see if she could blow it in different directions, and to try to make it move all the way around the tub (don’t worry, the gross-looking stuff floating in the water is just moss and grass that her brother decided to put in there – boys!)
Lesson 2: Grow and Change – a Science subject lesson. We discussed how her body has grown and changed over the years, from when she was just a teeny-tiny egg in mommy’s tummy, to being a baby who drank only Mommy’s milk, to a toddler who could endlessly explore and get into “trouble”, and now a little girl who is learning new things every day! I wanted to elaborate on the exercise, so we went exploring outside. We came across a dandelion-like flower in the grass and we were able to identify 4 different stages of how it is growing and changing… from a green star-like weed, then sprouts a flower from the center, then the flower closes and forms the seeds, then the magical, fluffy ‘Wish’ top emerges and the seeds blow away and re-plant themselves (unfortunately for my lawn) to start the process all over again! She did make a wish, which she refuses to share with me because, of course, if she did then it wouldn’t come true!
Lesson 3: Math – observing Larger and Smaller; Thicker and Thinner. We looked at pages from the activity workbook the Connections Academy provided, then also looked at things around the house and outside. Since this was a pretty easy task, I elaborated on the lesson to show her a few optical illusions on the computer to see if she can still identify which was bigger – it was a trick question, of course (bwa-ha-haaaa) also, timely enough, S’s grandpa had just come back from a trip with souvenir Astronaut outfits for her and brother – one slightly larger than the other – and we got them mid-lesson today!
Lesson 4: Language Arts – We saved this one for after dinner, and Daddy got to help with this lesson when he got home from work! Flexibility is the beauty of school from home! Daddy read Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and S then drew a picture of Goldi and the 3 bears in their house… one bear is smallest, one is medium, and one is the biggest. Then, on to accurately assimilate “Aa” attaining an awesome accolade! She already knows how to write the whole alphabet, but needs practice forming the letters correctly (so, hopefully she’ll have better handwriting than mine!). We elaborated on the lesson by creating a lower and upper case A using pipe cleaners… one color for each step of properly crafting the letter… then it was time to practice to make perfect!
